The Hon Bronwyn Pike

Former Australian politician

As the Uniting Church of Victoria's social justice spokesperson, Bronwyn Pike headed the extensive community services network. She has also been a President of the Victorian Council of Social Services and a director of Greenpeace.

Bronwyn has written numerous publications on social issues, and has also led and initiated numerous community campaigns supporting progressive social justice and human rights policies.

Given Bronwyn's deep understanding of communities and her role as Minister for Health we could more appropriately refer to her as the Minister for Healthy Communities.

The Hon Bronwyn Pike

Community Building: it's good for our towns and suburbs, but is it really good for our health?

Social connectedness is one of the most powerful determinants of our well-being. The more integrated we are with our community, the less likely we are to experience premature death of all sorts. If you smoke and belong to no groups, it's a toss-up statistically whether you should stop smoking or start joining.
